Competing on Features vs. Defining the Category

Most enterprise software companies get trapped in feature-comparison battles. When buyers compare you on a checklist, margins compress, sales cycles drag out, and the incumbent with the biggest brand usually wins.

Category Design Principles

Category creation is about evangelizing the problem before pitching your solution:

  1. Name the Missing Category: Rather than calling ourselves "patient communication software," we defined the "Patient Engagement & Digital Outreach" category.
  2. Anchor with Industry Analysts: Worked closely with KLAS, Gartner, and healthcare leadership forums to shape the category definition, ultimately achieving #1 KLAS Category Leader.
  3. Align Product, Sales, and Marketing: Every product release (MDpay, Self-Scheduling, eRegistration) reinforced the category story rather than acting as disconnected add-ons.

Outcomes

By executing on category design, we grew from $4M to $40M CARR, sustained 40% YoY organic expansion, achieved 3x consecutive Deloitte Fast 500 rankings, and executed a successful private equity recapitalization.
